Project #4 Exquisite Corpse / Solar Sign
Description
Partners names: Unnati Shukla, Iz Nettere. My initial sketch was Solar human.
Design Process
Solar human. This sign was depicted on the stones in the ancient time, in the form of petroglyphs. Ancient people believed in this sign as a deity and spirit of the sun. They may have portrayed them for several reasons. Some versions: - petroglyphs were part of some magical ritual that, according to the ideas of primitive people, was supposed to bring good luck on the hunt; - petroglyphs were a talisman against evil forces and helped shamans enter a state of trance, communicate with the spirits of their ancestors and ask them for protection; - petroglyphs, as "letters" to future generations, were supposed to warn about the danger that can come from certain animals, tribes, and tell about the life of their ancestors; - petroglyphs were the first manifestations of creativity among ancient people, that is, petroglyphs were just drawings and fantasies. In this regard, supporters of this version believe that it is not quite correct to study the life of primitive man from petroglyphs.
Unnati’s sketch is a South Asian woman from the Mughal Empire.
Iz’s sketch is a women body builder from the 80s.
We exchanged our drawings and created new Exquisite Corpses. My new sketch consists of the head of my previous sketch, the middle from Iz’s sketch, and the bottom from Unnati’s sketch. The new story I created mixing these figures is about a magical creature that came from the space, it has a silhouette of the human but also has signs of cosmic power. I tried to mix our sketches in something linear drawn and pictographic style. Like we would be able to see similar signs in the caves, sky, or spaceship.
Reflection
I used simple shapes and lines to create three parts of the sketch and tried to use user-defined functions, arguments, and parameters. I still couldn’t create copies of similar shapes, but was able to duplicate the “human” figure and change its parameters. I added some flickering color and background to underline some cosmic structure of the creature. This assignment was helpful to better understand the function arguments and parameters, but I need to make more sketches to be more confident in their use. I feel that I may not have used them fully.
